CERT Offers Disaster Preparedness Classes

NC CERT (North County Emergency Response Team) will have the first class in disaster preparedness classes for community members on Tuesday, June 10, at Living Waters Church, 2000 Reche Rd., at 6:00 PM. All classes are held on Tuesday evenings.

The eight classes offered in the complete program include learning how to proceed in personal preparedness for oneself, one’s family and one’s home; minor fire suppression; search and rescue; medical triage; working with emergency ham radio operators; and response to terrorist attacks.

Graduation is hands-on application of class material in a mock disaster situation drill.

The class is free of charge to the public and further information can be found online at www.northcountycert.com. From the Bishopric

“No sooner has one difficulty been settled than another has broken out. People hope for better times, but they do not come. Today no one can look at the condition of the nation with impartial eyes without being saddened at the prospects before it. Considerable anxiety is now beginning to be felt concerning the presidential election. Next November this takes place. Whom will the people choose? Much depends on their choice.”

No, these words were not spoken in recent times – but in March of 1876 by Apostle George Q. Cannon. Today we most certainly live in perilous times -- but so it was intended from the beginning of time. It was intended that life be a challenge so that we might succeed through overcoming and proving ourselves.

It is important that we shout warnings and fight to sustain God’s laws – but it is of far greater importance to fully trust in the Lord and find peace in Him. It is only with heavenly help that we will get through life’s challenges. The words of one of our hymns offers great comfort:

“Fear not, I am with thee; oh be not dismayed, For I am Thy God and will still give Thee aid. I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.”

The marvelous work will forever move forward. Even while deploring the sin and horror of our generation, President Gordon B. Hinckley always remained positive. Said he in April 2004: “Perilous times? Yes. These are perilous times. But the human race has lived in peril from the time before the earth was created. Somehow, through all of the darkness, there has been a faint but beautiful light. And now with added luster it shines upon the world. It carries with it God’s plan of happiness for his children.”

Congratulations to our graduating seniors. Many of our young men and women approach the end of their high school education. We recognize these outstanding individuals for their many accomplishments and contributions to their school, the community and the ward. All those that I have recently interviewed have expressed their intention to attend college in the fall. Nearly all of them are also graduating from early morning seminary – a feat which, in my opinion, is of equal or more value than the H.S. diploma. Seminary classes begin at 6:20 A.M. and meet every school day. To earn a certificate they must have 80% attendance or better. We wholeheartedly congratulate the following individuals for their outstanding achievements:

Primary

A lot of great things happened in Primary last month. Victoria Russell was baptized; not at the church, but in the Bishop's swimming pool. The plumbing problems at the church this last month prevented the baptism from taking place there so Victoria will have a special memory of being baptized in the Bishop's swimming pool. There were many people from the ward there to support her as well as many of her family. Her uncle from Utah baptized and confirmed her and it was a beautiful service. She is a very special little girl with a very sweet and loving disposition. I hope you all take some time to get to know her.

The girls ages 8-11 had an activity day at the church where each girl made their own stationary and wrote notes of appreciation to people of their choosing. We had a lot of fun and the girls really enjoyed it. We'll do that again this month, so look for more information to come. Birthdays this month include: Connor McDonald on June 3, Cameron Poulson on the 15 and Olivia Towers on the 21. Mark Rutherford had surgery earlier this month and Amy Rutherford had some extensive dental work done—both in the same week!

Our theme for June is about temples and how they bless us and our families. We love our teachers and those who help our primary each Sunday and especially your children. If you ever need a "pick me up", you're welcome to visit our primary and experience what we get to each Sunday with these precious children of our Heavenly Father.

The classes for "New Family Search" are going well. For those of you who have completed the course, a new feature has been added to the website. When you are in the "Pedigree with Details" window, there is a new button on the top of the row on the left side called "Summary". This window enables you to see all of the entries that have been combined or added and you can choose which one you would like to appear on your pedigree and family group records. In the past, when you combined entries, it would sometimes change the information on your records. This takes care of that frustration.

Remember, the goal is for everyone to take one of their family file cards to the temple for an Endowment on Nov. 8th. Other ordinances need to be done prior to that date. The youth are doing baptisms on April 16th. They can do more baptisms if they have family file cards to do. Contact Anne Renshaw or Dan and Kathy Lee if you need assistance.

Summer is just around the corner....school is almost out...the kids just want to get out and shout...
SUMMER IS HERE!!
Mark your calendar for our upcoming 1st annual 4th of July celebration at the Moffat's, fun starts about 2:00 PM. Come celebrate and spend the day with your ward family. There’ll be swimming, games, food, and fireworks. Barbequed hamburgers and hot dogs, drinks and watermelon will be provided. If your last name starts with A-M please bring a side dish and if your last name starts with N-Z please bring a dessert to share.
Ballroom dancing is coming up; watch the ward bulletin for dates.
This summer the stake is having a movie competition instead of road shows. Watch for details, your kids will be the stars!
MISSIONARY UPDATE

In General Conference we were reminded that the missionaries are full-time teachers, and that members are full-time finders. All of us have wonderful friends and associates where we have built solid relationships of trust, and our hope is that we can follow the Spirit as we invite them to hear more about the gospel.

The Fallbrook 2^nd Ward has a well-deserved reputation for being friendly and open to visitors. We hope that we can take advantage of upcoming ward activities and meetings to invite our friends, where they can feel the Spirit and be touched in their hearts.

The Ward Missionaries have great confidence in the teaching abilities of Elders Puett and Mosier, and stand ready to help you find referrals for them in any way.

Singing. Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Random ideas... Administrator 7:39 pm

I can carry a tune, kind of. Dad can sing. Dad has a great voice, and when we were dating he started singing my favorite song that was on the radio: “I have a squeaky ol’ lady, name of Cole Kin Katy, who embroiders all my jeans..” I loved that song, and I thought, “Gasp…he can SING. I’m so impressed.” I really fell in love right then. Grandpa Elmer could sing, and both my parents love to sing. I really enjoy hearing the talent on American Idol…but there is something that touches me more…and that is the person who tries to sing, and can’t. I really love that.
One Sunday I was sitting next to my very good friend, Sister _________; I just love her and I have even been her visiting teacher before, and she can’t sing. When the song was announced, she picked up that hymn book, opened to the right page and just started singing…and never did really hit a true note. I just loved it and loved her because I knew how much the church meant to her. She is a convert and joined with the support of her husband. He comes on occasion, but has no interest in being a member. I sat next to her and focused on the intent and volume of her voice and thought, “This is so touching. This means so much more than if she had a silver voice that pierced the room. This is truly sincere.”
Last Sunday Dad and I were sitting in front of the missionaries and I had another sweet experience because they can’t sing either. I know these two guys and there aren’t two more precious and eager elders anywhere. They are darling and their parents would be so proud of the hours they put in and the positive attitudes they have. They are always smiling and filled with the energy of the work. Just cute. Elder _________ was singing his heart out. It isn’t a strong voice - no vibrato or sustaining notes, yet it was pretty much on tune, but it was the sincerity that touched me. Every word he sang had meaning and I could feel that he was really happy to be there, in that pew, in our ward, on his mission.
Singing is a “Joyful noise unto the Lord,” but I just bet Heavenly Father takes a special delight in those darling people who can’t sing a note yet go ahead an let their voices be heard anyway. Here’s to the off-key singers. Bless them.

Father and Son Campout

The campout is scheduled for Friday, May 30th @ 5pm until Saturday, May 31st @ 12:00 noon at William Heise County Park in Julian (directions below). Dinner and breakfast will be provided by the ward (dutch oven, yum yum). All you need to bring is a tent, sleeping bag, pillow, and softball stuff. That's right, once again we will be having a fathers vs. sons softball game.

From Fallbrook take Hwy 76 east to Hwy 79. Turn right, going south toward Julian. At the 78/79 intersection in Santa Ysabel turn left, going east toward Julian. At Wynola start looking for the sign for William Heise Park (1 mile west of Julian). Turn right on Pine Hill Road and drive south for 2 miles to Frisius Road. Turn left (east) onto Frisius Road and drive for another 2 miles to the park entrance.

We will be in Group Camp #2 (same place as the last two years), which is all the way at the east end of the campground. The campsite is on a knoll. Look for a blue Toyota Tundra with a shell. I will be there around 5pm to start dinner preparation. There will be a campfire as well as an evening program. Please share this with all of your home teaching families.

From the Bishopric

Early in April we had the wonderful experience of listening and learning directly from the prophet and apostles and other leaders that are on the earth today. Some of those messages have settled into my mind and heart. They have become that which I think about when I do not have to think.

President Uchtdorf– speaking in the priesthood session, related what happens when we are “… a Few Degrees” off our desired path. My thoughts were some what focused on the Straight and Narrow Path that leads back to the presence of our Heavenly Father. We have all heard many analogies that relate to this topic – so why would this specific talk at this specific time be of importance for President Uchtdorf to speak about. Perhaps many of us could benefit from a life course correction of “… a Few Degrees”

President Packer – in speaking about “The Twelve” apostles and of past and present prophets and apostles also struck a cord within my soul. The guidance of a living prophet and of living apostles is vitally important to us.

During the coming weeks and months may we each take the opportunity to read and study the conference addresses. I am looking forward to refreshing the insights and learning’s from General Conference.

Primary

Our theme this month is: Heavenly Father planned for me to come to a family. I can strengthen my family now. We will talking about families in the scriptures, scripture study, FHE, family prayer, the priesthood and how each family member has a divine role.

A member of the Bishopric comes in the first Sunday of the month and introduces the theme. This gives the children a chance to get to know them and for the Bishopric to see what great children we have in primary!

I hope you have all had a chance to see the notice in the bulletin about the primary is collecting crayons, markers, drawing tablets, colored pencils, stickers that each of the primaries in the Stake are collecting for the Stake Activity Day Girls Service project which will take place in the near future. The girls will put together activity kits for children who are in shelters. You can give your things to one of the primary presidencies. We appreciate your donations.

Please encourage your children to continue to work on their Faith in God books. They get these booklets when they're 8, after they are baptized, and will work on it until they turn 12. It is a great way for them to begin to build their testimonies and have opportunities to serve.

Thank you again for your support and for your precious children. We are strengthened by them each week.

Other Events/Organizations

Stake Adult Coed Volleyball is starting on Saturday May 3rd from 6PM to 9PM. Enjoy an evening of fun and friendly competition with all of the Wards in our Stake. Even if you don't have enough to form a team - we will help once you arrive! Non-members and investigators are welcome. We will continue each Saturday through the end of May.

CRIME ALERT: Fallbrook is one of the very few North County communities showing a recent increase in violent crime (homicide, rape, assault, burglary, theft). Find out why our city had a 29% increase of such crimes in the last year and what we can do about it. Attend the Crime Prevention Meeting on Tuesday, May 27, 7:00 P.M. at the Zion Lutheran Church (1405 E. Fallbrook Street). Local law enforcement officers from the San Diego Sheriff Dept. and the Fallbrook Sheriff Dept. will address this issue and advise us of the latest trends.

WARD ACTIVITIES

Its May and the flowers are blooming, and its time to be outside. It's camping out for the Dads and their sons for the Fallbrook 2nd ward Fathers and sons outing, May 30 and 31. Girls, the boys are away so its time for us to play. Pot luck and chick flicks at the Tavano's. May 30 6:30. Watch for more details to come.

Don't forget to mark you calendar for July 4. Fun, dinner and fireworks.

MISSIONARY WORK

Missionary Thought

I read a cute article the other day about the perception that Latter-day Saints are friendly only to advance their missionary agenda. Perhaps we can grow by considering the following excerpt:

“I wish that instead of teaching every member a missionary that we taught every member a friend. A friend invites to include others and makes them feel welcome. A friend respects beliefs. A friend is interested in their friend’s belief system rather than just wanting to teach their own agenda.”

I like this! Without belaboring the idea, I think we can share the light we have found without making people feel like that is the only reason that we are interested in them. That, perhaps, would be acting with real Christ-like love.

Our current missionaries, Elder Puett and Elder Mitton, are working hard and appreciate your daily prayers and constant support.
