Preserving Traditional Marriage (submitted by Bishop Morrison)

Below is a letter from the First Presidency regarding the upcoming vote on November 4, 2008, on a proposed amendment to the California Sate constitution that would restore the March 2000 definition of marriage that was approved by the voters.

Dear Brethren and Sisters:

Preserving Traditional Marriage and Strengthening Families

In March 2000 California voters overwhelmingly approved a state law providing that “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” The California Supreme Court recently reversed this vote of the people. On November 4, 2008, Californians will vote on a proposed amendment to the California state constitution that will now restore the March 2000 definition of marriage approved by the voters/

The Church’s teachings and position on this moral issue are unequivocal. Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God, and the formation of families is central to the Creator’s plan for His children. Children are entitled to be born within this bond of marriage.

A broad-based coalition of churches and other organizations placed the proposed amendment on the ballot. The Church will participate with this coalition in seeking its passage. Local Church leaders will provide information about how you may become involved in this important cause.

We ask that you do all you can to support the proposed constitutional amendment by donating of your means and time to assure that marriage in California is legally defined as being between a man and a woman. Our best efforts are required to preserve the sacred institution of marriage.

Sincerely yours,

The First Presidency

It should be noted that we have been asked to donate "of our means and time" on this issue. I have not, as yet, received additional information regarding how we might best accomplish that. President Hatch attended a video conference (with all Stake Presidents in California) on Sunday, June 29, that addressed the role of the Church and involvement of members in successfully bringing about the passage of the marriage amendment. I will provide further information as it is received on how we can support this effort, as directed by the Brethren.

A web site that I have found helpful is www.ProtectMarriage.com. This is a growing, broad-based coalition of organizations, churches, and individuals who believe that marriage’s foremost purpose is the raising of healthy children in a family with a mother and a father. It provides information on: why an amendment is needed, the wording of the initiative, how to help, FAQ, news, and endorsements (as of June 28, the Church was not listed as an endorser for unknown reasons). Similar information can be found through the American Family Association (www.afa.net) and Liberty Counsel (www.libertyaction.org).

She was a true New Yorker until she and her husband decided to move to California. They drove here, hated it, and drove back. The worst part was driving over the mountains because she hated heights. She raised three children (Bob the only boy), has 7 grand children, and 5 great-grandchildren. She is a joy in our Ward!

Family History

The classes for "New Family Search" are going well. For those of you who have completed the course, a new feature has been added to the website. When you are in the "Pedigree with Details" window, there is a new button on the top of the row on the left side called "Summary". This window enables you to see all of the entries that have been combined or added and you can choose which one you would like to appear on your pedigree and family group records. In the past, when you combined entries, it would sometimes change the information on your records. This takes care of that frustration.

Remember, the goal is for everyone to take one of their family file cards to the temple for an Endowment on Nov. 8th. Other ordinances need to be done prior to that date. The youth are doing baptisms on April 16th. They can do more baptisms if they have family file cards to do. Contact Anne Renshaw or Dan and Kathy Lee if you need assistance.

Missionary Update

In General Conference we were reminded that the missionaries are full-time teachers, and that members are full-time finders. All of us have wonderful friends and associates where we have built solid relationships of trust, and our hope is that we can follow the Spirit as we invite them to hear more about the gospel.

The Fallbrook 2nd Ward has a well-deserved reputation for being friendly and open to visitors. We hope that we can take advantage of upcoming ward activities and meetings to invite our friends, where they can feel the Spirit and be touched in their hearts.

The Ward Missionaries have great confidence in the teaching abilities of Elders Puett and Mosier, and stand ready to help you find referrals for them in any way.

Other News

Jovanna Flor was instrumental in introducing her boyfriend Kyle Hicks into the gospel. They met right after they both graduated from boot camp at Lackland. They were assigned same technical schools right around the San Antonio area. During school, Jovanna began attending church and eventually started going to the singles ward. Her then friend Kyle started showing interest in the church and yesterday 6/8/2008 was baptized a member. They have made many friends. The support and sincere love that the membership has shown to Jovanna and Kyle has been of enormous importance for the success in the conversion and fellowship of Kyle. According to Jovanna, Kyle comes from an intellectually-oriented family; one of his brothers is a theologian. There is so much that I wish to talk about with him.

Jovanna and Kyle will be visiting us for the 4th of July weekend!

Regards: Galo Flor

Remember the California “hands-free” cell phone law begins July 1st! –Thank you Sis. Thompson

California cellphone law may be more costly than the $20 fine

If there's a fatal car accident, a violator of the hand-held ban could face a felony charge, some experts say.

(As reported by Ralph Vartabedian, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer on June 19, 2008)

If there's a fatal car accident, a violator of the hand-held ban could face a felony charge.

The threat of a $20 fine may not sway every California driver from using a hand-held cellphone when a state ban takes effect July 1, but a motorist who ignores the law and causes an accident could face huge civil judgments or even jail if fatalities result.

A cellphone violation during a fatal car accident may not be enough to bring a felony charge, but it could trigger a misdemeanor manslaughter charge. Conviction on those charges can carry up to a year in jail for each death.

In the past, a plaintiff had to prove that the use of a cellphone by a driver who caused an accident was negligent behavior. With the new ban, a judge can instruct a jury that it must find defendants negligent if they used a hand-held cellphone.

For COX Cable Subscribers

Dear All,

With the advent of all digital TV in early 2009 the San Diego Public Affairs council has negotiated a “deal” with COX Communications for the LDS audience to obtain a free self installation kit including a digital receiver (cable box) which will save members $55.00 over the cost of professional installation. This self installation kit will assist members in the inevitable transitioning over to digital programming. In addition, we hope all members will Subscribe to the Faith and Values channel, which includes BYU TV and General Conference without the 2 hour delay, for only $3.00/ month. To encourage this the San Diego Public Affairs Council has negotiated a Free BYU TV Preview Week from July 21 – July 27th to be aired on channel 435 on COX Digital Cable. BYU TV will be generating informational postcards which will be distributed throughout the stakes in the near future. Members will need digital cable to access this free preview.

This offer does not circumvent the traditional and ordinary costs of monthly a digital cable subscription. Here are the current basic charges depending on what COX customers currently have in their homes.

  • If a customer currently has only Cox Standard Service, without Cox Digital Cable, the upgrade to Cox Digital Cable with the Faith & Values Package is only $9.00 per month extra.
  • There is also a monthly Digital Cable receiver rental charge of $5.25 per month.
  • If a customer currently has Cox Digital Cable, they can subscribe to the Faith & Values Package for an additional $3.00 per month.

The offer for the free digital installation kit is good only from July 1 – August 15th.
